Germany in America’s backyard

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Argentinian President Mauricio Macri, who have met in Buenos Aires last week, both voiced  their hopes for a free trade agreement between the EU and the Mercosur bloc. “We are glad that negotiations for a trade deal between Mercosur and the European Union have been relaunched after an interruption that lasted for a year.” She stated after the meeting. “Germany is seeking allies to face difficulties together”, she later added.

Maricio Macri felt optimistic vis-à-vis the progress of the negotiations. The Argentinian president was indeed the chief catalyst behind the relaunch from Mercosur’s side.  Argentina and Brazil have both invited the bloc members to put aside their longstanding disagreements.

Since taking office in December 2015, Macri has worked hard to open up the Argentinian economy to FDI. These pro-market reforms have been praised by Merkel.

Merkel’s one-day visit also aimed to prepare the handover of the presidency of the G20 diplomatic group, which Argentina will take over from Germany next year.
